With populations in all our major cities skyrocketing, it seems that high-density living is the way of the future. Which is why it’s no surprise that a growing number of Australian’s are embracing apartment living. The sky-high lifestyle certainly comes with a wide range of perks, but we’ve managed to narrow it down to our top five reasons why it could be the right move for you!
1. Financial
Buying a house can come with a hefty price tag and opting for an apartment can be an affordable alternative. Houses come with the responsibility of repairs and maintenance which can add up to a pretty penny, especially older or heritage listed homes. Roof leaks, structural issues, damp and mould or simply just keeping a house updated with a renovation can be far more expensive than in an apartment. These maintenance costs will solely fall on the owner of the house, whereas apartment owners will share the cost of maintenance and repairs in common areas among all owners. Well run strata schemes will also budget for substantial works in advance meaning that you won’t be met with any surprise expenses.
2. Location
Looking for a home that has everything on your doorstep? Most new developments are being built in thriving communities meaning public transport, restaurants, shops and entertainment may all be within walking distance. It’s easy to see the lifestyle benefits that come with this! From shorter work commutes, to more places to catch up over a drink with friends, apartment living makes balancing your priorities simple. Given the vertical nature of apartments, many may also have a lovely view and more natural light due their high vantage point. And whilst some might assume you have less privacy in apartments; in fact, some may be more private than houses. An elevated sky home could mean no neighbours looking in to your lounge room.
3. Community
With your next-door neighbour being only steps away and fantastic common spaces shared by the building’s residents, apartment living is all about creating a connected community! Socialising with neighbours is easier than ever, making it more likely for you to create life-long friendships. Every apartment has a different communal living atmosphere, so be sure to research your building thoroughly before you move in. We’ve seen some great examples of this from communal barbeque and lounge areas, to cinemas and games rooms to rooftop gardens – and the best thing is, you don’t even have to leave your building.
4. Security
Multiple layers of security make unwanted entry less likely with most buildings having a main entrance building door, security lift and and then your front door. This makes access without security key fobs very difficult. If your apartment has a foyer or secure front entry system, then that’s even better. There is also the added security of living close to neighbours who know you and who can always look out for your best interests. Also, the ‘lock and leave’ lifestyle that apartments can offer is comforting, especially when you are off taking that well-earned vacation!
5. Service and facilities
Many apartment blocks come equipped with a concierge or building manager on site (some who operate 24 hours a day). A concierge can be an amazing facility to call on not only for the additional security but also the convenience. Some concierges will sign for packages if you aren’t home, collect or handover keys, arrange access to your apartment for tradespeople, dog walkers or cleaners or even hold on to something for a friend to collect from you. Some concierges will even receive and store your groceries! An onsite building manager can help you manage repairs you need inside your apartment, can recommend quality trades people and some may even be able to help you with small repairs and maintenance themselves. Finally, if you are lucky enough to have facilities in your apartment building then you may have access to a gym, swimming pool, sauna and/or spa. Many new buildings have at least a gym included, which not only saves residents money on gym memberships, it’s more convenient and all maintained for you.
