5 Interior Design Trends of 2022

2022 is here and this year’s design trends will be better and bolder than ever.

We spoke to Interior Designer, Property Stylist and Director of Vault Interiors, Justine Wilson who shares the design trends that are going to be big in 2022.

Justine’s predictions are:

01. Colourful kitchens

Think the 60’s and 70’s when kitchens were often loud, colour blocked and had cabinetry in colours such as orange, yellow, green, or brown. This vintage throwback look will have a modern twist however with curved kitchen islands, arches and rounded edges reigning supreme.

 Instead of an all-laminate look that was prevalent in the 70’s, these bold cabinets or feature walls will be paired with luxe looking marble or quartz counter tops and seen with either bold coloured or crisp white modern tiled splashbacks. Pastel tones such as soft blue, mint and pink will be popular, along with colourful appliances and kitchen accessories.

02. Cottage core

This is a style that has gained momentum thanks to Pinterest and Instagram – creating beautiful swoon worthy inspirational shots that project a carefree, simple idyllic lifestyle. It’s a style summarized by pretty things, vintage finds, and cute garden cottages. This movement also coincides with the sustainability movement, and it’s characterised by vintage or reclaimed furniture, pretty china, lace, floral prints and eclectic trinkets or handmade objects.

03. Earth textures

Very much taking influence from European style, this trend is all about terrazzo, concrete, stucco, terracotta, and natural stones. These are already popular materials in renovations, and the trend will be dominate again next year. This style really suits outdoor spaces well and will create a luxe European hotel or Greek Island vibe to your alfresco entertaining areas. Think rendered walls, and wooden pergolas, textured sandbagged or rough feature walls, inbuilt seating, and artful cut-outs such as arch windows or alcoves, these are the design elements you can expect with this trend.

04. Monochromatic

Monochromatic interiors will always be timeless, and this palette suits any style whether it’s classic (think upper east side NYC apartments) or a modern rustic look (think Joanna Gaines), which has gained momentum in the last few years.

Timber furniture will still be paired with this look, if it’s a classic interior think mahogany or walnut items, and for modern interiors, think light oak or wenge stained woods. This palette will be mainly for floors and walls but extends to the general aesthetic, such as accessories, cushions, blinds, and rugs.

05. Jungle vibes

People have gone plant mad, and you will find next year that many homes and apartments are brimming with plants. The joy in having a green thumb has grown since we have all spent more time at home, as well as people yearning for more greenery in their lives.

Think pretty, leafy plants hanging from the ceiling, grouped eclectic pots clustered on every surface, dramatic green walls and little vases anywhere there is space. People really want to bring the outdoors in these days, and creating spaces that feel alive, lush, and dynamic will be key.
